Cottage Pudding

1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
2 cups sifted enriched flour
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
dash of nutmeg
1 cup milk

Cream shortening and sugar.  Add egg and beat until light and frothy.

Sift together flour, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg.  Add alternately with milk to creamed mixture, beating after each addition.

Bake in greased baking pan in moderate oven 350F about 35 minutes.

Serve warm with butterscotch, chocolate, or lemon sauce, or with sweetened fresh or canned fruits.

Serves 6.
