Journal Prompt ~ Random Act of Kindness

Today's Writing Prompt: Random Act of Kindness

Have you ever been on the receiving end of kindness?

I've been on the receiving end of a random act of kindness many times in my life.  One that really touched me was 10 or 12 years ago.  I can't remember the exact date.  I used to run a bunch of craft related Yahoo! groups and the women I met on these groups were my company every day.  A couple of times we had made afghans to send to a group member who was expecting a baby or going through tough health issues.  It was during this time that I was having trouble with allergies.  You know the whole sinus pain, itching, runny nose misery.  And this went on for months and months.  I was so sick.  And one of the fun side effects was an eye infection that totally went out of control to the point I had to keep wet wash cloths handy because if I closed my eyes they would seal shut.  My eyes hurt like they were full of glass.  I'm sure I whined online once in a while about how lousy I was feeling and how much I appreciated my online friends since I wasn't able to get out anymore.  They were able to keep their plans top secret until the day my beautiful comfortghan arrived in the mail.  I still have that blanket and use it whenever I don't feel well and I'm curled up in my chair.

At the end of November 2019 my husband had a heart attack.  Don't worry, he recovered well.  But at the time I was so overwhelmed.  We had FINALLY moved my 103-year-old grandmother into a nursing home, I had a horrible upper respiratory thing going on, my house and life were a disaster after nursing my grandmother until the move.  Friends showed up at the hospital to keep us company, brought food and kind words, and made the time pass a little faster.  I spent most of my days at the hospital until he was released . . . at which point I panicked.  No food in the house.  The house an absolute disaster.   How was I going to get things in shape so I could bring him home?  In secret, some very special friends made arrangements with our kids to get into the apartment and take care of everything.  They stocked groceries, put some homemade meals in the fridge and freezer, cleaned the apartment, did the laundry . . . AND got the Christmas decorations out.  I have never been so grateful for anything in my life.

These are just a couple of the many times when someone's thoughtfulness made my life a little better.  I am a very lucky woman.

Journal Prompt ~ Whoops

Today's Prompt: Whoops

Have you ever made a really public mistake?

Woofy Whoops Game - Fun Dog Game Of Chance For All The Family ...

Are you kidding?  I am a physical and social klutz.  When I have to speak in public I am told I do a pretty good job but I'm such a wreck that afterwards I can't remember a single word I've said.  If there is something to trip over or get twisted into, I will.  I know this so I've just learned to accept my clumsiness and make it part of who I am.

Journal Prompt ~ Mornings

Today's Prompt: Mornings

Image result for morning"

What's the first thing you do when you wake up every morning?

I am a creature of habit, especially in the morning. In fact, I get cranky if my morning routine is tampered with in any way. Don't worry, I will skip the parts you really don't need to know about.

When I wake up in the morning I go to my studio and turn on the light and my computer. Next step is to make coffee and throw bread into the toaster. I put butter and peanut butter on my toast, collect any other food items I plan to include with my breakfast such as fruit or cereal, pick up my fresh hot cup of coffee . . . and return to the studio where I leisurely read my emails and catch up with everyone on Facebook while enjoying my breakfast.

Only when these things are accomplished can I shower and get dressed and start my day.

This all gets thrown out the proverbial window if there is an early appointment on my calendar.

Book Review ~ The Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan

"The wisest and most captivating novel tan has written." -The Boston Globe
Set in San Francisco and in a remote village of Southwestern China, Amy Tan's The Hundred Secret Senses is a tale of American assumptions shaken by Chinese ghosts and broadened with hope. In 1962, five-year-old Olivia meets the half-sister she never knew existed, eighteen-year-old Kwan from China, who sees ghosts with her "yin eyes." Decades later, Olivia describes her complicated relationship with her sister and her failing marriage, as Kwan reveals her story, sweeping the reader into the splendor and violence of mid-nineteenth century China. With her characteristic wisdom, grace, and humor, Tan conjures up a story of the inheritance of love, its secrets and senses, its illusions and truths.

Newsweek:  Tan has once more produced a novel somewhat like a hologram: turn it this way and find Chinese-Americans shopping and arguing in San Francisco; turn it that way and the Chinese of Changmian village in 1864 are fleeing into the hills to hide from the rampaging Manchus. . . .The Hundred Secret Senses doesn't simply return to a world but burrows more deeply into it, following new trails to fresh revelations.

Biography:  With her acclaimed 1989 novel The Joy Luck Club and its successors, Amy Tan succeeded in revealing the Chinese-American sensibility to readers in unprecedented numbers. In mystical, winding prose, she draws the boundaries and commonalities between generations of women who are related, but born worlds apart.

I found this book to be a little slow and confusing at the start but I am so glad I stuck it out.  By the time I was at the middle of the book I was so engrossed that I was staying up at night until my eyes were too tired to see just to find out what Kwan's next story was going to be. (Hmmmmmmmm . . . now that I read this, I wonder if this might be why I've been so "foggy" the past few days.)

I love the ending; very bittersweet and nothing quite proven.  I would recommend this book to anyone as a great read.

Journal Prompt ~ Failure

Today's Prompt: Failure

Image result for failure"

What have you ever failed at in life?

Wow . . . do I have a long list.  I think the failure that bothers me the most though is that I never finished high school.  Looking back I realize how much growing up time I missed out on.  I made myself a "grown up" at 16.  Not one of my brightest decisions.  I do have a college degree and a university degree though.

Canadian Music ~ The Duhks

The Duhks are a Canadian folk fusion band, formed in 2002 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Featuring banjo, fiddle, guitar, percussion, and vocals, The Duhks blend folk music together with various Canadian and American traditional styles, including soul, gospel, old-time country string, and zydeco. The band also commonly plays traditional Irish dance music, integrating Latin-influenced percussion as well as often Celtic- and Cajun-influenced fiddle-playing.

In 2002, Appalachian-influenced clawhammer banjo player Leonard Podolak founded The Duhks in Winnipeg with gospel- and soul-influenced singer Jessee Havey, fiddle player Tania Elizabeth, and Celtic-influenced guitarist Jordan McConnell—all Canadian musicians. The name "Duhks" comes from Scruj MacDuhk, Podolak's defunct previous band.

In June 2014, The Duhks officially released their new album, Beyond the Blue. The touring lineup for that album cycle also included Québécois multi-instrumentalist Colin Savoie-Levac on guitar and Swedish fiddler Anna Lindblad on violin as of January 2015.

In the spring of 2016, the band announced on their Facebook page that they would no longer be touring, but proceeded to play a handful of shows in and around Winnipeg over the next few years featuring a lineup of original members Leonard Podolak, Jessee Havey, Jordan McConnell, and Scott Senior plus fiddler Jeremy Penner.

On March 30, 2022, The West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg announced a 20th anniversary reunion show by the original lineup for May 2022,[8] with further dates at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival announced shortly thereafter.

Journal Prompt ~ 25+ years of basketball

Today's Prompt: Sports

Are you a sports fan? Do you watch or participate? Which sports?

My family has many interests . . . movies, music, politics and . . . BASKETBALL.  First my oldest son played in high school and in 3-on-3's.  Now he coaches youth competitive traveling teams as well as a college team.  All three grandsons played at their schools, 3-on-3's and/or on the traveling teams.  My youngest son has played in 3-on-3's and the local men's league.  They wear basketball themed clothing, watch basketball, practice basketball and talk basketball.   I worked it out one day and I have basically been watching basketball for more than 25 years.

I still don't understand the language or rules but I watch and I cheer.

Journal Prompt ~ In Common

Today's Writing Prompt: In Common

Image result for snakes and bugs"

What is something you and your spouse or best friend have in common?

My dear hubby and I are very very very different people but we actually do have a few things in common. We love movies especially if one of our favourite actors are in them like Meryl Streep (my fav) or John Wayne and Duane Johnson (Hal's fav). We love some of the same kinds of music like 50-70s rock. We both agree that our children and grandchildren are mostly perfect. We both love letterboxing but for different reasons. I love to carve stamps and solve clues and the social aspects of the hobby. Hal loves to drive me around and make me happy and he will pull letterboxes out of creepy places that might have snakes or bugs . . . even though we both have no fondness for snakes and bugs.

Book Review ~ The books in your to-read pile . . .

My niece and I were shopping and running errands in London ON this past week and wandered into the Indigo book store.  The store was having a buy 3 get one free sale.  So I now have some REAL books added to my to-read list.

First purchase was The Nectar of Pain by Najwa Zebian.  I have heard Ms Zebian speak and read her first book Mind Platter.  Her poetry is poignant and uplifting and haunting . . . and I could go on.  I am looking forward to reading Nectar of Pain.

My second selection was Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari.  I have listened to many of Professor Harari's online lectures, taken a MOOC through Coursera, and listened to his podcast discussing fascism and nationalism.  He is charming and eloquent and his lectures are actually fun.  I've already read Sapiens:  A Brief History of Humankind, a big thick book, even in paperback, which is so interesting to read that you wish it was longer.  I can't wait to crack open this new book.

I spotted We Were Feminists Once by Andi Zeisler on the $10 table.  I love the clearance tables.  The subtitle intrigued me.  "From Riot Grrrl to Covergirl, the Buying and Selling of a Political Movement."

I was having trouble thinking of a fourth book I might want and nothing else on the clearance tables was calling out to me.  I headed to the checkout and that's where I spotted the greatest deal of all -- 5 Canadian novels for $20.  The original price was around $95.  Jackpot!  The side of the package says "The World Needs More Canada:  Celebrating 150 years."  It contained Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery, The Orenda by Joseph Boyden, Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munro, The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King, and Barney's Version by Mordecai Richler.  I've read the first three before but I am really looking forward to reading them again.

When I went to pay for my purchases (2 full price, 1 free because of the sale, 1 on clearance) I found a forgotten gift card in my wallet.  Perfect!

Also in the photo is Outliers:  The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell.  My son just read it and thinks I will like it.  I've read the back cover and it does sound very interesting.

I have not included all the ebooks waiting for me on my Kobo because the list is way too long.

So, what books are in your to-read pile?

Journal Prompt ~ Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Image result for where do you see yourself in 5 years"

As my mother would probably agree, I'm not very ambitious. At least not in the competitive or commercial sense. I've never wanted to invent the next great thing that is going to save the world. I never wanted to be a big shot of any kind.

I've always wanted to be happy. I have finally learned late in life (but not too late, I hope) that happy comes in moments, it is an attitude, it is a decision you make every morning . . . I am going to try and be happy today. And what I know is that I am happy when I have my family around me. They could be completely oblivious to my presence and I wouldn't care. I am happy just to have them near.

I am happy when I accomplish something and it doesn't matter if it is cleaning a room or writing a book. Accomplishment makes me happy.

Spending time with my friends makes me happy. Moments of quiet solitude make me happy.

It amazes me that for so much of my life I searched for happiness only to find out that I had it all the time. I just didn't recognize it or enjoy it.

Close To My Heart ~ Year-round Crafting with Four Seasons!

Year-round Crafting with Four Seasons!

Year-round Crafting with Four Seasons! #fourseasons #seasonal #seasonalcrafting #cards #scrapbook #memorykeeping #crafting #patternedpaper #spring #summer #autumn #fall #winter #yearround #yearly #stamps #thincuts #love #family #friends #holiday #season #gift

No matter what time of year you dive into the creative process, there are always plenty of memories to be captured, friendships to be celebrated, and art to be crafted. Embracing your creative side year-round can be quick and easy when you’re working with seasonal papers and stickers. Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the crafting potential offered by our Workshop Wow: Four Seasons workshop kits and showing off just how easy it is to create stunning artwork on theme!

All the pages and cards on display today were designed using the Four Seasons paper collections in our 2022–2023 Core Products catalog. (To view these collections and all the other amazing products available in this catalog, click here!) Now, let’s get started!

First up is our springtime cardmaking workshop, bursting with floral features and bright colors. These cards favor a variety of sentiments, from birthday wishes, to greetings, to “just because” options. One standout feature of these cards is the use of White Acrylic Hearts across all of the card designs. While the cards also share a commonality in paper patterns and sticker usage, the inclusion of the White Acrylic Hearts as a common element across all our springtime cards serves as a simple but effective way to tie them all together, working to further preserve a cohesive theme.

Year-round Crafting with Four Seasons! #fourseasons #seasonal #seasonalcrafting #cards #scrapbook #memorykeeping #crafting #patternedpaper #spring #summer #autumn #fall #winter #yearround #yearly #stamps #thincuts #love #family #friends #holiday #season #gift

For additional cohesion, these cards all pull their sentiments and stamped accents from the Seasonal Haul Stamp + Thin Cuts set and the My Acrylix® Spring Greetings stamp set. These elements, while allowing for differences from card to card, also serve to uphold the springy feel throughout the entire assortment!

This springtime theme continues with our Four Seasons—Spring scrapbooking workshop. This workshop kit includes a garden of floral patterns across the seven pages available through this kit design. Fun fact: All of our Four Seasons scrapbooking workshop kits follow a similar design pattern, making it easy to create each page from each seasonal theme! Even with the design similarities, though, the papers, stickers, and color palette used in each seasonal page set the individual pieces apart. One standout element of the spring pages is the use of Woodgrain Die-cut Flowers. Additional floral elements were added to these pages from the Smell the Flowers Stamp + Thin Cuts set.

These stamps and Thin Cuts dies are particularly prevalent in this 12” x 12” “Love You” single page.  Flowers and leaves from this set were both stamped directly on the base page and stamped on die-cuts and attached to the base page with 3-D Foam Tape, leaving a gorgeous multi-dimensional effect!

Moving on through the year, we get to our sunny summer layouts and cards! The gorgeous pieces in our summer selection feature a more vibrant color palette, making the scrapbook pages stand out in any album, and giving the cards an unforgettable foundation!

Our scrapbook pages take on even more floral accents, courtesy of the Chasing Sunshine Stamp + Thin Cuts set.

Our 12” x 12” “Go with the Flow” layout offers a great example of how these dies can be used to create custom embellishment clusters, perfectly tailored to the Four Seasons—Summer paper patterns and stickers!

Year-round Crafting with Four Seasons! #fourseasons #seasonal #seasonalcrafting #cards #scrapbook #memorykeeping #crafting #patternedpaper #spring #summer #autumn #fall #winter #yearround #yearly #stamps #thincuts #love #family #friends #holiday #season #gift

The trick to making these embellishment clusters blend in so seamlessly with the paper and sticker designs is  stamping them in complementary ink colors.

As with the scrapbook pages, each seasonal set of cards is designed following a similar pattern. Similarities can be seen from season to season, but each set has its own unique flair. Our summer cards sport the same bright hues as the scrapbooking pages, and are embellished with a handful of White Acrylic Flowers

One theme that is seen throughout all of our Four Seasons cards is the usage of the truck die-cut from the Seasonal Haul Stamp + Thin Cuts. To get twice the cardmaking power, the Four Seasons—Summer cardmaking workshop kit includes two design options, both featuring the truck die-cut.

Year-round Crafting with Four Seasons! #fourseasons #seasonal #seasonalcrafting #cards #scrapbook #memorykeeping #crafting #patternedpaper #spring #summer #autumn #fall #winter #yearround #yearly #stamps #thincuts #love #family #friends #holiday #season #gift

The summer truck cards have a relatively simple design, but are the perfect addition to the set, with truck beds full of acrylic flowers and an uplifting sentiment sticker! No matter which version of this card you choose to make, it’s sure to be a delight for any friend or family member you give it to!

Another great two-for-one card design can be found in the “Live a Little” and “Go With the Flow” cards. This dual design principle can be seen in various forms throughout the Four Seasons cards, and is a great way to create multiple cards quickly.

Next up are our selection of Autumnal cards and scrapbook pages. These leafy layouts and crisp cards are perfect for all kinds of festive occasions and the preservation of all kinds of memories. One of our favorite layouts from this set is the 12” x 12” “Crisp Air, Warm Hearts” layout, which includes a fun, striped panel section along the bottom of the pages. This layout really puts the power of the Four Seasons—Autumn paper on display, along with a handful of stickers.

The paper patterns can also be seen in the array of dovetailed pennants and paper layers in the upper half of the left page. By relying on the usage of patterned paper for the majority of these pages’ decoration, it makes the creative process quicker and easier to follow! With that being said, though, this page also benefits from the inclusion of Autumn Air Stamp + Thin Cuts set, as its stamps and dies have come together throughout the page to create embellishment clusters around the title pieces and photos.

Another beautiful piece that stands out in this collection is the 12” x 12” “Autumn Leaves & Pumpkins Please” layout! This photo-packed layout includes many of the elements seen in the “Crisp Air, Warm Hearts” layout, but this example embraces a more simple, white background toward the center, giving it a classic design. By going this route, we are left with optimal focus on the photos while at the same time, elegantly preserving the autumnal theme!

Year-round Crafting with Four Seasons! #fourseasons #seasonal #seasonalcrafting #cards #scrapbook #memorykeeping #crafting #patternedpaper #spring #summer #autumn #fall #winter #yearround #yearly #stamps #thincuts #love #family #friends #holiday #season #gift

Last but not least are our winter cards and scrapbook pages, and each piece is packed with frosty wintery goodness! One of our absolute favorites in this selection is the “Thinking of You This Season” card. This card makes beautiful use of the Four Seasons—Winter woodgrain paper option for a secondary base, and a total of six other patterns that have been cut into strips of varying width and arranged side by side to form a stunning background.

To finish it off, we trimmed two pieces of paper—Scarlet and Mink, respectively—dovetailed and layered them, and stamped our festive sentiment and a handful of snowflakes in Pine ink. This, along with the aforementioned patterned paper strips, and a small constellation of White Acrylic Stars, make this card a real holiday treasure!

The final piece we’ll be looking at today is our “Winter Wishes” card, which shows off a simple but effective fold-over technique. A great feature of Close To My Heart patterned paper packs is that each page is double-sided, giving you twice the crafting capability with a single page. In this card, the base has been built out with a piece of Espresso cardstock, a white woodgrain piece on top of that, and a wintery foliage piece for the top layer. However, instead of leaving the top layer piece as-is, the top right corner has been folded down to reveal the woodgrain piece beneath it. This also shows off the plaid pattern on the back of the foliage piece, allowing both the patterns on this double-sided paper to work together at once!

This card has been finished off with stamps from both the My Acrylix® Winter Wishes stamp set and a stamp and die-cut from the Seasonal Haul Stamp + Thin Cuts set, with the title piece popped up off the base with 3-D foam tape.

This beautiful card is perfect for friends, neighbors, and family members alike, and is a delight to receive, and to make!
