Close To My Heart ~ Colour Match Embellishments by Colouring Them In!

Color Match Embellishments by Coloring Them In!

Color Match Embellishments #crafting #embellish #glitter #accent #adhesivebacked #color #diy #markers #wood #acrylic #plastic #cork

When creativity strikes, it can do so in a full spectrum of colors! Our exclusive colors can be found in Exclusive Inks™ stamp pads and re-inkersshimmer brushesembellishments, and so much more. With these products, you can achieve effortless color coordination in all of your crafting.

Sometimes, however, the embellishments that we want to use in our artwork are only available in neutral colors, such as white, wood, or cork. The good news is that you can get crafty with your embellishments as well and color them to meet your color needs!

First things first, we absolutely love all of our embellishments and the colors that they come in. We wouldn’t have them any other way, and they serve us so well in lots of art projects, as you have witnessed in the many artwork examples shown on this blog, our catalogs, and our other social media outlets. The idea today is to show you just another amazing facet to these already incredible little embellishments that can make all the difference!

A lot of the color that we’ve added to our example embellishments can be added directly from the tool to the embellishment. For example, markersshimmer brushes, and glitter glues, all have tips fine enough that can dispense the color right onto your choice of embellishment. When you are coloring with these sorts of tools, we encourage you to color the embellishment before adding it to your project. If it is adhesive-backed, color it while it is still on the backing sheet that it came on. For embellishments that are not adhesive-backed, use a small amount of adhesive on the back and attach it lightly to a piece of scratch paper. This way, you can color the embellishment to just the right color you want without worrying about making stray marks on your project. You can then place the newly colored embellishment after you’ve achieved the color or effect you were hoping for.

Porous surfaces, such as wood or cork, will absorb a lot of the colors—gels, glues, and embossing powder are the exceptions—whereas the color media will sit on nonporous surfaces found on embellishments like dots and gems. Regardless of the embellishment you may be garnishing, always remember to allow the color to dry in order to avoid any unwanted transfer (onto yourself or other parts of your project).

We will leave you with one final tip. If you are wanting to color match an embellishment with one of our exclusive colors, our Exclusive Inks™ are your answer! Depending on the embellishment, you may want to either use one of our stamp pads or re-inkers. If you are adding color to clear sparkles (see our Wild Berry Exclusive Inks™ example in the first set of embellishments, above), use a sponge or dauber with your ink pad. Ink the sponge, then gently dab the embellishment until the desired color is achieved. For embellishments that may require more detail, a re-inker paired with a waterbrush allows great control and precision. Place a drop of re-inker onto an all-purpose mat (or another nonporous surface that can act as your palette). Lift the ink with the brush to add color to your embellishments in a more controlled manner.

If you have any questions on any of these ideas that we shared, please let us know in the comments below and we’ll get back to you as quickly as we can!

There’s no limit to the creative ways you can add a pop of color to your artwork!

101 Interesting Facts About Canada ~ World's Largest Skating Rink

The Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is 7.8 km (4.8 miles) long and has a total maintained surface area of 165, 621 m² (1.782 million ft²), which is equivalent to 90 Olympic size skating rinks. This is called an ice rink (as distinguished from any number of other frozen bodies of water) because its entire length received daily maintenance such as sweeping, ice thickness checks and there are toilet and recreational facilities along its entire length. We would like to put a claim on the longest (7.8km) and largest in square meters (165, 621 square meters) maintained ice surface on a natural body of water in the world.

Journal Prompt ~ 26 Jan 2022 ~ Comfort Food

What is your favourite comfort food when it's cold outside?

A Taste of Canada ~ Figgy Duff

YIELD:8 SERVINGS OR MORE

prep time: 10 MINUTES

cook time: 1 HOUR 30 MINUTES

total time: 1 HOUR 40 MINUTES

Newfoundland Figgy Duff has nothing to do with figs; raisins were once referred to as figs here & are always added to this traditional steamed pudding.

Ingredients

2 cups flour

½ cup sugar

2 tsp baking powder

1/3 cup melted butter

¾ cup milk

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup raisins

Instructions

Sift together the flour sugar and baking powder.

Add the raisins and toss well.

Add the milk, melted butter and vanilla.

Mix all together with a wooden spoon just until a soft dough is formed. Put dough into a pudding steamer or a wet heavy cotton pudding bag, tying the bag with a piece of butcher string but leaving about an inch of slack at the top to allow the pudding to expand. Boil for approximately 1 1/2 hours. This is most often done in the pot with the boiled root vegetables, cabbage and salt beef included in a Jiggs Dinner but can be done in a pot on its own as well.

Canadian Music ~ Chad Brownlee

Chad Brownlee (born July 12, 1984) is a Canadian country music artist, songwriter, actor, and former ice hockey defenceman. He has one #1 Canada Country hit with "Forever's Gotta Start Somewhere".

Brownlee was a draft pick for the Vancouver Canucks in 2003, going in the sixth round No. 190th overall. After four years of playing for the NCAA's Minnesota State Mavericks (located in Mankato, Minn.), Brownlee made his professional debut with the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads playing a lone season with the club in the 2007–08 season before ending his playing career.

Following a series of injuries, he turned his attention to music the following year. His first single, "The Best That I Can (Superhero)", was released in November 2009. Brownlee's self-titled debut album, produced by Mitch Merrett, was released in August 2010 via MDM Recordings. He followed it up with Love Me or Leave Me in 2012. Brownlee was nominated for a Juno Award for Country Album of the Year on February 19, 2013. The awards took place on April 21 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Brownlee's third album, The Fighters, was released on June 3, 2014.

Brownlee landed his first #1 hit with "Forever's Gotta Start Somewhere" in April 2019. It was included on the EP Back in the Game, which was released on June 21, 2019 via Universal Music Canada. Brownlee extended that to become his fourth album on January 10, 2020. On June 3rd, following a controversial social media post in light of the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter movement that some viewed as "racist and Anti-semitic", Brownlee was dropped from his record label. He later apologized for the incident and vowed to make donations to relevant charities and associations.

A July 2020 Nielsen Music study found Brownlee to be the eighth-highest played Canadian artist on domestic radio in the first half of 2020, ahead of Brett Kissel and JP Saxe, and behind Dallas Smith and Drake.

Brownlee's first role as an actor came in 2010 film Tooth Fairy as a unnamed hockey player with no lines. He is set to debut as a co-star in the 2021 film Range Roads as "Bruce", the ex-boyfriend of the main character "Frankie".

A Taste of Canada ~ Bumbleberry Pie

I've eaten bumbleberry pie several times but never made one. That may change since I've learned the trick of cutting pies into servings and then freezing them. Otherwise I HAVE TO eat the whole pie . . . LOL.

This recipe sounds promising.  Let me know if you try it.

Yield: 2 - 9 inch pies
Bumbleberry Pie II

Ingredients
5 ½ cups all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
2 cups shortening
¾ cup cold water
1 egg
1 tablespoon vinegar
4 cups apples - peeled, cored and chopped
2 cups chopped fresh rhubarb
2 cups sliced fresh strawberries
2 cups fresh blueberries
2 cups fresh raspberries
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 cups white sugar
⅔ cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons tapioca
1 egg yolk, beaten
2 tablespoons water

Directions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step 2
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Whisk together 3/4 cup water, egg, and vinegar. Stir into flour until mixture forms a ball. Divide dough into 4 balls. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 4 hours, or overnight. Roll out dough portions to fit a 9 inch pie pan. Place bottom crusts in 2 pie pans. Set aside top crusts.
Step 3
In a large bowl, combine apples, rhubarb, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and lemon juice. Mix together 2 cups sugar, 2/3 cup flour, and tapioca; gently toss with fruit mixture. Divide into 2 pastry lined pie pans. Cover with top crusts; trim and crimp edges. Brush tops with egg wash (1 egg yolk beaten with 2 tablespoons water). Cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to vent.
Step 4
Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until filling is bubbly in center and top is golden brown.

Close To My Heart ~ Add Dazzle with Embossing Techniques

Add Dazzle with Embossing Techniques

One of the most dazzling embellishment techniques you can incorporate into your creations is heat embossing! This technique only takes a few minutes to achieve, but the end result is breathtaking. Today, we’re going to show you a few ways to use heat embossing in your artwork, and then take it a step farther by adding color to the interior of your embossed images!

  • Easy Embossing Techniques #embossing #heatembossing #ctmh #CloseToMyHeart #instructional #craftingtechniques #crafting #cards #diy #floral #sweetashoney
Easy Embossing Techniques #embossing #heatembossing #ctmh #CloseToMyHeart #instructional #craftingtechniques #crafting #cards #diy #floral #sweetashoney

If you’re not familiar with heat embossing, this technique starts with stamping an image with sticky or viscous ink, like a VersaMark™ ink pad. You then sprinkle the stamped area with embossing powder, tap off the excess powder, and then pass a special heat tool over the image, allowing the embossing powder to melt into the ink. This leaves you with a metallic, acrylic, or UV-coated finish over your stamped image, depending on what type of embossing powder you use.

For today’s techniques, we’ll not only be showing off some gorgeous, embossed artwork, but we’ll also be teaching you how to add color to these embossed sections using Distress Oxide™ Ink Pads and our very own Exclusive Inks™ stamp pads!

We’ve put together an instructional video to show you each step of these eye-catching techniques. Follow along with Art Studio director, Karen Pedersen, as she teaches you how to achieve gorgeous colored embossing, using some of the beautiful papers and stamps from our Sweet as Honey collection. Enjoy!
