Day 1 of Our Road Trip to the East Coast

We are on holiday.  Yay!  Dear hubby and I are driving to the east coast, exploring as much as possible, and returning home in 14 days.

I am an organizer so I created an envelope for each day of our trip and put all the pertinent information and maps in each.

At 6 am this morning we opened the envelope for Day 1 . . .

Such a beautiful part of the province.  Hal even let me drive my car for a couple of hours.  That almost never happens.  But it gave him a chance to just sight see without having to watch where he was going.

Our first stop was Iroquois ON.  How do you find the best food in town?  Find some locals who are just hanging out chatting.  Two lovely gentlemen pointed us in the direction of Yesfi's which is located in a small shopping plaza.  Good service.  Good food.  Very friendly people . . . staff and customers.  We had a delightful time sharing travel stories with couples at two other tables while enjoying our lunch.  This is an old style restaurant serving Canadian, Greek and Italian food.  Hal ordered the hot chicken sandwich and apple pie with whip cream.  I had lasagna and garlic bread.  The lasagna was great.  The garlic bread was a regular slice of bread with garlic butter spread on and then toasted lightly.  The highlight . . . bread pudding.  Oh how I love good bread pudding!

After lunch we headed for the waterfront to watch a ship go through the Iroquois lock.  Took lots of photos, of course.  Low point was this gift shop which had nothing worth buying.  I am always on the look out for interesting post cards.  They had none.

We also solved some tricky clues to find an adorable little letterbox before leaving Iroquois.

Our next stop was Upper Canada Village.  It is very similar to Fanshawe Village in London ON.  We had a lovely wagon ride around the village.

The letterbox we found in Cornwall was a very simple find.

We checked in to the Canada Continental Hotal in Cornwall ON.  I don't have much to say.  The room is okay but not properly cleaned.  The corners are dirty, the furniture is older . . . but really for the price we paid its not so bad.

We got ourselves cleaned up and enjoyed a good lunch at Shoeless Joe's.  I've never been in any Shoeless Joe before.  The menu was good.  Our server was excellent.  I ordered a burger and fries, and watermelon sherbert.  Hal had the special which was a half-rack ribs, 4 chicken wings, french fries and cole slaw.

Guess where we are going tomorrow?

A Taste of Canada ~ Fiddleheads

I do enjoy fiddleheads.  They have a green bean-y, asparagus-like, pea-ish taste and they are just fun to look at. From Chateline Magazine: HOW-TO It’s Almost Fiddlehead Season! Here’s How To Cook This Springtime Veggie Properly Fiddleheads are a Canadian delicacy, but undercooking them can lead to food poisoning by Amy Grief  Updated Apr 9, 2019 Fiddlehead season is short, so when you see the adorable green curlicues at your grocery store or farmers’ market, buy them while you can. Before chowing down on these little springtime delicacies, there’s a few things you should know first since fiddleheads can cause food poisoning if they’re not cooked properly. What are fiddleheads? These tightly curled coils are ostrich fern fronds. They start appearing in late April and early May in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and are usually found in forests, marshes and by rivers and streams.
