The film attracted $1.04 million in North American box office, the third highest among all North American releases for the three-day opening period starting March 8. It ended up grossing over $4.2 million in Canada – making it the top-grossing English Canadian film subsidized by Telefilm Canada between 1997 and 2002.
Men with Brooms is definitely Canadian. The cast all looked and acted like "real" people. The comedy is understated and enjoyable. I'm a fan of some of the physical comedy as well . . . like one of the curlers on the hometown team slipping and falling flat on his back on the ice, ruining the masterful march of the team onto the ice.
The team members come home for the funeral of their former coach and, after the reading of the will, they decided to stay and try and complete their late coach's last request. Their difficulties on the ice are only slightly more difficult than their lives
I won't tell you the ending except to say, like a "Hallmark Moment", everything works out in the end.
The film won a Canadian Comedy Award for its "Pretty Funny Direction", and received two nominations at the 23rd Genie Awards, one for Molly Parker's performance and another for the screenplay.
This movie is not everyone's cup of tea but I really enjoyed it.
