Day 3 of our mini-letterboxing-vacation-adventure

June 24, 2018

We survived our very "cosy" room at the Star Inn in Niagara Falls.  It was raining pretty steadily so we decided to do only drive-by letterbox finds.  No hikes in the rain for us.

While I was packing up our stuff, Hal found a nearby Tim Hortons and brought back coffee and oatmeal.  And off we went.

Our first stop was a $ store where we purchased umbrellas and a plastic make up bag to keep our log book dry.  Our second stop was to find War of 1812 Series:  Battle of Queenston Heights in Queenston ON.

We were enticed into the Mackenzie Printery for several reasons.  We would be dry.  There were lots of mechanical things for Hal.  Anything history always makes me happy.  The museum contained the story of William Lyon Mackenzie and 500 years of printing history.  The tours are guided by very knowledgeable staff and we actually set print, printed a poster and made bookmarks on various pieces of equipment.

Time to head north to Niagara-on-the-Lake ON.  We found Adinkra Symbols:  Good Fortune but Sweet Treat is definitely gone.

However, Sweet Treat did lead us to an incredibly interesting British pub where we enjoyed lunch.  The tables are all wood tops with Singer sewing machine bases.  The "decor" is hewed wood supports and lots of swirled plaster.  Called the Olde Angel Inn, the food was quick, hot and delicious.  I ordered bangers and mash and Hal ordered the shepherds pie.  I think any good English person would have turned over in their grave to see the way they made tea though . . . absolutely blasphemous.  Tin pot, warm water and a Red Rose tea bag.  Calamitous!

And we were off again . . . to Burlington ON . . . where we picked up Siste, Viator: Halton Hills Memorial Gardens and Siste, Viator: Greenwood Cemetery.

And then we headed home.

A Taste of Canada ~ Fiddleheads

I do enjoy fiddleheads.  They have a green bean-y, asparagus-like, pea-ish taste and they are just fun to look at. From Chateline Magazine: HOW-TO It’s Almost Fiddlehead Season! Here’s How To Cook This Springtime Veggie Properly Fiddleheads are a Canadian delicacy, but undercooking them can lead to food poisoning by Amy Grief  Updated Apr 9, 2019 Fiddlehead season is short, so when you see the adorable green curlicues at your grocery store or farmers’ market, buy them while you can. Before chowing down on these little springtime delicacies, there’s a few things you should know first since fiddleheads can cause food poisoning if they’re not cooked properly. What are fiddleheads? These tightly curled coils are ostrich fern fronds. They start appearing in late April and early May in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and are usually found in forests, marshes and by rivers and streams. Taste-wise, fiddleheads, which are popular amongst food foragers, are...

SORT:  Bring all of your paper to one area. Sort it all into piles: KEEP, SELL, DONATE, TRASH PURGE:  bag up, and assign a price to paper bundles that you want to SELL at a garage sale or online, and put the bags in the garage sale box.
