Book Review: The Blue Tattoo by Margot Mifflin

There have been many stories told about Olive Oatman and much has been written.  Some of the stories are exaggerated and some are totally invented.  Margot Mifflin attempts to set the record straight, examining Olive's engrossing story from her childhood to her death at 65.  The book is well written and interesting, full of details about the times and places and people in Olive Oatman's life.   What makes Olive's story so engrossing?  Olive was 13 when her family and others broke  from the Utah Mormons and set out to find their own Zion in California.  Through a series of disagreements the group broke up into several smaller groups and went their separate ways.  Olive's family were killed on the trail by a band of Yavapai Indians and Olive and one sister were taken as slaves.  About a year later they were sold to a Mohaves tribe.  Her face was tattooed in a traditional manner which suggests she was more a member of the tribe than a sl...

Canadian Music ~ Caribou

Daniel Victor Snaith (born 1978) is a Canadian composer, musician, and recording artist who has performed under the stage names Caribou, Manitoba, and Daphni. Snaith originally recorded under the stage name Manitoba, but after being threatened with a lawsuit by Richard "Handsome Dick" Manitoba (real name Richard Blum), formerly of punk band The Dictators, Snaith changed his performance name to Caribou. Snaith's previous full-length albums were then re-released under the new moniker, and The Milk of Human Kindness was released in 2005 by Domino. In June that year the album topped the !earshot Campus and Community Radio Top 200 chart. When playing gigs, Snaith usually performs with a live band and plays percussion. Ex-bandmates include bassist Andy Lloyd of Born Ruffians and drummer Peter Mitton, now a producer for CBC radio. Currently, the live band consists of Snaith, Ryan Smith, Brad Weber, and John Schmersal. Live shows also often include complex video projections on a ...

Canadian Music ~ Captain Tractor

Captain Tractor is a Canadian folk rock band, based in Edmonton, Alberta. They play a punk-influenced variant of Celtic folk music, similar to such bands as Great Big Sea, The Pogues or Spirit of the West. Their songs are often rich in local, cultural, and geographical references. The band's most famous songs have been renditions of the folk music classics "The Log Driver's Waltz" and "Drunken Sailor", as well as a cover of the Arrogant Worms' "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate". They have also developed a following for their brand of Canadian rock, with singles such as "Up the Hill", "Frozen Puck to the Head", "This Is Not a Sad Song", "Another Drinking Song", and "The Bastard of Strathcona County". In celebration of the release of the band's sixth album, North of the Yellowhead (2005 Six Shooter Records), Edmonton's Alley Kat Brewing Company released Captain Tractor's Yellowhead Wheat A...

101 Interesting Facts About Canada ~ The National Food of Canada

Every list I Googled for National Food of Canada had poutine at the top or close to the top of the list. For my own 2 cents worth, its not poutine if it doesn't have the white squeaky delicious cheese curds on it.

Book Review: Vancouver by David Cruise and Alison Griffiths

When I was looking for a cover photo for this review I happened to glance at a few reviews of this VERY thick paperback . . . 918 pages. Vancouver, written by David Cruise and Alison Griffiths (who apparently are married to each other), has been compared sometimes favourably and sometimes not to books by James Michener. I can see the resemblance in that it is a long well-written, well-researched book about a particular place. The main difference is that each section tells the story of a different person with the only things in common being the location, the fact that they are all stories of down-on-your-luck sorts who make good, and a mystery set of jade beads. I was mesmerized by the story from beginning to end and think it would be a great read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

Close To My Heart ~ Scrapbooking Technique for 12" x 12" Pages Using Paper Strips!

Scrapbooking Technique for 12″ x 12″ Pages Using Paper Strips! Ask and you shall receive! A couple of times on this blog we’ve shown you how to make the pages of an entire 6″ x 8″ album using the  3-2-1 paper strips formula . We don’t always have the time to design elaborate pages to keep up with all our photos and, as fellow scrappers, we get that! With this super speedy technique, you can create 10 two-page layouts in as little as two hours! Since publishing these posts for the 6″ x 8″ pages, we have received several requests to adapt this formula for 12″ x 12″ pages— and we did! The formula for the 12″ x 12″ pages isn’t as clean as “1-2-3,” so we don’t have as catchy a name for the bigger pages. For today, we’re simply referring to this technique as paper piecing, or paper strips, scrapping. As we’ve implied, what we’re doing today is providing a simple formula for cutting your patterned papers and assembling 12″ x 12″ layouts. Even with this formula, you will continue to...
