A Taste of Canada ~ Tourtiere

I've been lucky to have tried this dish many times.  Even the frozen version isn't bad at all. Tourtière, also known as pork pie or meat pie, is a combination of ground meat, onions, spices, and herbs baked in a traditional piecrust. ... Some versions of tourtière are made from only ground or chopped pork.  Serve tourtière with… Something with Veggies like roasted carrots, roasted beets, roasted tomatoes, glazed carrots, pea soup, roasted Brussels sprouts, or mashed potatoes and gravy.  Something Pickled such as pickled beets, butter pickles, pickled vegetables, mustard pickle, chow-chow.  Just Salads like a garden salad, fennel salad.  Something Fruity like apple crisp or pear crisp. I have not tried this recipe . . . yet . . . but it does look good . . . Servings: 16 servings Ingredients Meat Filling (for 2 pies): 2 lb ground pork 1 medium onion finely diced 2 tsp salt 1 tsp dry mustard 1 tsp thyme 1/2 tsp sage 1/4 tsp savoury 1 cup water Crust from 4 or ...

Book Review: Remember Guam

Remember Guam:  A collection of memories and recipes to warm your heart and lighten your spirit by Paula A. Lujan Quinene I am a procrastinator.  I procrastinate when I really don’t want to do something.  I don’t want to write this review.  What happens if authors will no longer be willing to send me books to review once I post this?  I have put on my big girl pants and I’m going to do it right now. I really thought I was going to like this book.  I enjoy reading about different places and cultures.  I definitely love to read recipe books.  I wanted to like it because the author was good enough to send me a copy to review.  I did like some of it.  I was interested to learn how to crack a mature coconut.  Unfortunately, the stories very quickly became repetitive and boring.  Some of the recipes sounded good and quite do-able but many require ingredients you might only find in large cities. I think I was hoping to...

Lying -- An essay by Sam Harris

A short time ago Amazon.com offered a copy of Lying for free and, as you know, I do love things that are free.   Today I read the essay.  At the end I felt that Harris had taken all the thoughts I'd every had about truth and untruth and found a way to connect them all in a coherent manner.  It did not take long to read.  It was written in a comfortable, conversational way. Most helpful was his definition of truth:   The intent to communicate honestly is the measure of truthfulness . This essay is available at https://book.enjoy-lifestyle.us/?book=1940051002&sid=fullbook if you would like to read it.  It is truly worth the time.

The Art of Scraplifting

The Art of Scraplifting  To be an efficient scraplifter, you must first admit your addiction. I use to feel shame that my layouts were not nearly as inspiring or wonderfully designed as those seen in magazines, until I discovered that you could ‘borrow’ someone else’s brilliant design work. Here are a few tips that I have discovered: Buy lots of magazines and use sticky notes to mark the pages that you feel a connection to. Visit the many websites available, and by right clicking on your mouse, save the picture onto your hard drive in a special folder you created just for scraplifted ideas. It is very helpful if you have a large hard drive to hold the many pictures you will collect. Join one (or more) of the many online groups that are for scrapbooking addicts like me. Many of these also have lots of layouts to inspire you to ‘borrow’. You must also be a frequent visitor to your local – and favourite – scrapbook store. The store is a treasure trove of ideas, classes, and of ...

101 Interesting Facts About Canada ~ Hawaiian Pizza was Invented in Canada

The History of Hawaiian Pizza BY:  DEVON SCOBLE APRIL 5, 2016 | 9:39 AM Despite its tropical name, Hawaiian  pizza  is actually a Canadian creation. The pineapple-laden pie is the brainchild of retired cook, Sam Panopoulos, who first served pineapple on pizza at Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ont. By the mid 60s, Satellite Restaurant (now under different ownership) had been serving  pizza  for a few years, although Panopoulos, now 82,  says the dish was still a novelty for Canadians, who at the time topped their pies conservatively. “People only put on mushroom, bacon and pepperoni, that’s all,” says Panopoulos. “I had pineapple in the restaurant and I put some on, and I shared with some customers and they liked it. And we started serving it that way. For a long time, we were the only ones serving it.” As we know it today, Hawaiian  pizza  is a classic American-style cheese pizza topped with ham and pineapple. Variations may include...

Close To My Heart ~ Photos to Take This Summer

Photos to Take This Summer, and What to Do with Them! We will be rolling out those hazy, lazy, crazy days of summer real soon, and to prep we’ve compiled a list of photo ideas so they won’t be so “hazy” come fall (how “lazy” and “crazy” these next couple of months are is up to you!  ) Whether you’ll be going on a huge vacation or planning on sticking around locally, there is so much life to capture during the summertime. The best part, these moments don’t require extravagant locations or fancy dress. All you need is you and your people and, of course, your camera. Before we jump into our list of photo ideas, let’s talk about what to do with all of these photos once you have them. The worst thing you can do is take hundreds of awesome photos and then loose them to the seemingly bottomless pit of a gallery that you have saved on your phone or on social media, to never be seen again. Let’s just not do that this year. We can do better, and here’s how. The first step is to turn d...
