A Taste of Canada ~ Caesar Cocktail

The Caesar was invented in 1969 by restaurant manager Walter Chell of the Calgary Inn (today the Westin Hotel) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He devised the cocktail after being tasked to create a signature drink for the Calgary Inn's new Italian restaurant. Thank you Walter Chell. The Caesar is one of my favourite cocktails, virgin or classic, in the whole world. Many of my best and worst decisions have been made over a Caesar. Forget the celery though. I want a dill pickle. Book Review: Grant by Mitchell Yockelson

It has been one hundred and fifty years since the Civil War and Ulysses S. Grant is still considered one of the greatest officers of the United States Army. He didn't want to be a soldier but when  his father submitted an application to West Point for his son, Grant reluctantly attended. Grant served in the Mexican War and distinguished himself in combat.  He continued to serve until shortly after he married.  Grant wanted to be with his family so he resigned. He spent years trying to make a living in several different careers but w hen the country split apart in 1861 and war between the northern and southern states erupted, Grant knew he needed to serve his country.   He believed it was his duty to do so. When he was unable to secure a commission with the regular army because of unproven rumours that he was a heavy drinker, he signed up with the Illinois volunteer army. Grant was a natural leader and rose quickly to Commander of the Union Army.  After...

Canadian Music: The Band

The Band was a Canadian-American rock band formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 1967. It consisted of four Canadians and one American: Rick Danko (bass guitar, vocals, fiddle), Garth Hudson (keyboards, accordion, saxophone), Richard Manuel (keyboards, drums, vocals), Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals), and Levon Helm (drums, vocals, mandolin, guitar). The Band combined elements of Americana, folk, rock, jazz, country, and R&B, influencing subsequent musicians such as the Eagles, Elton John, the Grateful Dead, the Flaming Lips, and Wilco. Between 1958 and 1963, the group was known as the Hawks, a backing band for rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. In the mid-1960s, they gained recognition for backing Bob Dylan, and the 1966 concert tour was notable as Dylan's first with an electric band. After leaving Dylan and changing their name to "The Band", they released several records to critical and popular acclaim, including their debut album Music from Big Pink, in 1968. According ...
