Goodreads 2020 Update ~ Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

I have no idea how many times I have read this book over the years.  It is elegant and heart-breaking.  It is also #21 on Goodreads 2020 Update:  Books You Need to Read to Be Considered Well-Read.

Jane Eyre is a gothic romance novel written in England during the Victorian Era by Charlotte Bronte.

Jane Eyre is an orphan who was raised by a wealthy but cruel aunt.  She is relieved when she is sent to a boarding school but her relief is short-lived when she finds she has traded the cruel aunt for a cruel headmaster.  With limited options, Jane finishes her schooling and teaches at the school for a couple of years.  When the opportunity of a governess position in a private home becomes available, Jane is happy to accept.

It is at her new home, Thornfield, that Jane meets the love of her life but, of course, that love does not run smoothly.

Canadian Artists and Bands ~ Alain Caron

Alain Caron | Artist | F Bass, Inc

I'm starting to think I am very ignorant about Canadian music which makes me rather happy that I am going through this list of Canadian artists and sharing with you.

I love jazz and I've probably heard Alain Caron many times and just not known it.

According to Wikipedia, Alain Caron (born May 5, 1955) is a French Canadian jazz bassist.

The youngest of 11 children, Caron started playing bass at age 11 and began pursuing jazz at age 15. His musical skills were formalised by correspondence lessons with the jazz improvisation teacher Charlie Banacos and by attending a summer session at Berklee College of Music.

He is a former member of Uzeb (with Michel Cusson on guitar and Paul Brochu on drums) that was active from 1976 to 1992. In 1993, Caron began releasing concept albums as Le Band. He has also recorded with Leni Stern and with Gino Vannelli.

Goodreads 2020 Update ~ #7 ~ Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen ~b

"The book is narrated in free indirect speech following the main character Elizabeth Bennett as she deals with matters of upbringing, marriage, moral rightness and education in her aristocratic society. Though the book's setting is uniquely turn of the 19th century, it remains a fascination of modern readership, continuing to remain at the top of lists titled "most loved books of all time", and receiving considerable attention from literary critics. This modern interest has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and a plethora of books developing Austen's memorable characters further."
- Wikipedia

The first time I remember reading Pride & Prejudice was for a first year English class at Western University. I have read this book several times since and enjoyed it more each time.

Definitely a winner on my list of great reads.

Canadian Music ~ Acres of Lions

I have definitely never heard of Acres of Lions (sorry Lions) so I went in search of info and videos.

It turns out they are a Canadian alternative rock band from Victoria BC.  Here's their websitehttps://www.acresoflions.com/.  It doesn't look like it has been updated since 2016.  I wonder where they are now?

Well, according to their Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/pg/acresoflions/posts/?ref=page_internal  they retired.

Goodreads 2020 #4 ~ Animal Farm by George Orwell

Image result for Animal Farm

I don't know how many times I have read Animal Farm in my life.  Let's just say a few.  The story has always stayed with me.  I understand there are movie and cartoon adaptions that I vaguely recall but they don't have the power of the original book.

George Orwell write about a farm run by the drunken Mr. Jones which is untended and conditions are harsh.  The animals join together and overthrow Jones and create an equal society for the animals and the farm becomes a wonderful place to live.  Well, except for the fact that it does not take long before the pigs begin taking over and recreate the conditions of the original farm.

The most loved character in the book, at least for me, was Boxer the old workhouse who continued to believe in the dream and work for the dream even as he was being taken away, sold to the slaughterhouse by the pigs.

This novel is meant to illustrate the rise of Russian revolution and the rise of Stalinism.  It is not a relaxing beach read.  It is a book worth reading though.

101 Interesting Facts About Canada ~ Nobel Prizes

Did you know that as of 2019 Canada has 27 Nobel Prize Laureates?

Donna Strickland

I found this article and video online about Donna Strickland, only the second Canadian woman to win a Nobel Prize (Alice Monro was first), and the very first Canadian woman to win a Nobel Prize for science.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/list-of-canadians-who-have-won-the-nobel-prize-1.4117675

There is a discrepancy between CTV's list of winners and Wikipeida's.

CTV did not include John Macleod who was co-winner of the prize with Frederick Banting, or Michael Spence (maybe because he is Canadian/American?).  Jim Peebles is only missing because the article is from 2018 and Peebles won in 2019.

Food Food Food ~ Shrimp

I love shrimp.  My husband does not.  This is why I love it when we make the occasional foray to a restaurant that serves good seafood . . . I get to eat shrimp (and lobster).

True story . . . My grandmother (who was probably 102 at the time) wanted to go to Red Lobster.  So off we went, my mother (her daughter), my husband, and myself.  We all ordered platters of shrimp except for Hal, of course, who ordered fish and chips.

Half way through the meal Nanna says she's never had lobster and she would like to try some.  So I ordered her a lobster tail which I rarely do because it is so expensive.  She took a couple of bites, decided she didn't like it and went back to eating her shrimp.  It's a good thing Mom and I enjoy lobster.

Since I almost never cook shrimp at home, I only have one tried and loved shrimp recipe for coconut shrimp.

Big List of Canadian Artists and Bands ~ A. C. Newman

Okay A. C. Newman is definitely a mystery to me . . .

According to Wikipedia:

Allan Carl Newman (born April 14, 1968) is a Canadian musician and singer–songwriter. He was a member of the indie rock bands Superconductor and Zumpano in the 1990s. Following the breakup of those bands, he reemerged as the leader of the New Pornographers in 2000, a band who have enjoyed commercial and critical success.  In 2004, Newman launched his solo career, performing as A.C. Newman. He has stated he chose "A.C." for his solo career because "it sounded like a pseudonym, but it's not a pseudonym."

AC Newman played The Rock Shop (pics & short setlist)

101 Interesting Facts About Canada ~ #1

Did You know that Alert, Nunavut is the world's most northern permanent settlement?

Alert, in the Qikiqtaaluk Region, Nunavut, Canada, is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world, at latitude 82°30'05" north, 817 kilometres (508 mi) from the North Pole. The entire population of the census subdivision Baffin, Unorganized, is located here. (Baffin Region is the Statistics Canada name for Qikiqtaaluk.) As of the 2016 census, the population was reported as 62, an increase of 57 over the 2011 census. It takes its name from HMS Alert, which wintered 10 km (6.2 mi) east of the present station, off what is now Cape Sheridan, in 1875–1876.

Alert has many temporary inhabitants, as it hosts a military signals intelligence radio receiving facility at Canadian Forces Station Alert (CFS Alert), as well as a co-located Environment Canada weather station, a Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) atmosphere monitoring observatory, and the Alert Airport.

Goodreads 2020 ~ #2 1984 by George Orwell (1949)

According to Goodreads 2020 Update Books You Need to Read to Be Considered Well-Read, #2 is 1984 by George Orwell. I remember reading this book many, many, many years ago and was enthralled. Written soon after the end of WWII, Orwell was concerned by the rise of several totalitarian governments such as those of Nazi Germany, Italy, and Soviet Russia. He was concerned that other governments were moving more toward totalitarianism and that they might start taking away more and more of people's rights and freedoms. I couldn't believe that it was possible that people in a thinking world would allow this to happen and yet . . .

. . . 1984 was banned. Banning books is a form of censorship and a deprivation of the right to free speech. George Orwell's 1984 has been banned many times and many places for its social and political themes, as well as for sexual content.

In 1950 it was banned and burned in communist Russia for its anti-communist views. In 1981, Jackson County, Florida parents challenged the book for being pro-communist and containing explicit sexual content.

As a much more mature person, I recently decided to reread 1984. I couldn't finish it. Things I would have never thought could happen are happening in our world today. This link will take you to an interesting article on some of Orwell's predictions that have actually come true. https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ways-george-orwell-1984-true-article-1.2662813

If you enjoy dystopian fiction or want to know why 1984 is so much a part of our popular culture you should read this book.
